This is a mandatory verification process. Failure to produce the credit/debit card will result in denial of boarding. Please be aware that in such cases, cancellation charges will be applicable.

Weather Conditions in Amarnath Ji Yatra:

Temperature/ Snow

Months

The weather during the Amarnath Ji Yatra can be quite unpredictable due to its high-altitude location in the Himalayas. Here’s a brief breakdown of the conditions pilgrims can expect:

  1. Temperature: Temperatures during the day can range from 10°C to 20°C. However, nights can get extremely cold, with temperatures dropping to 0°C or even below, especially near the cave. It’s advised to bring layered clothing to cater for the temperature variations.
  2. Snow: Snowfall can be witnessed predominantly in the winter months and early spring (November to April). During the Yatra months, snow might not be falling, but remnants from the winter months might still blanket the area, especially at higher elevations near the cave. This makes trekking more challenging and is the reason why helicopters are a popular mode of transport.
  3. Rain: July and August are part of the monsoon season in the region, so sudden rainfall can be expected. It’s essential to bring waterproof clothing and ensure that electronic items and important documents are sealed in waterproof bags.
  4. Hail: Occasionally, there might be hailstorms, particularly during the onset of monsoon.
  5. Oxygen Levels: Given the high altitude, oxygen levels decrease, making breathing difficult for some. It’s crucial to maintain a steady pace and keep oneself hydrated.
Precautions:
  • Always check the weather forecast before starting the journey.
  • Equip yourself with adequate warm clothing, rain gear, and waterproof boots.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected. Due to its unpredictable nature, the weather can change suddenly, resulting in closures or changes in the Yatra.

** Given the unpredictable weather, the Yatra often faces disruptions. Pilgrims are advised to always stay updated about the current weather conditions, be prepared for any eventualities, and, most importantly, prioritize safety above all else.

ABOUT NEELGRATH

Nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of the Himalayas, Neelgrath serves as the prime helipad for pilgrims embarking on the spiritual Amarnath Ji Yatra. Operating under the watchful eye of Himalayan Heli, the shuttle services at Neelgrath have become a vital conduit for devotees yearning to witness the divine ice Shiva Linga at Amarnath.

History & Location: Neelgrath’s prominence in the Amarnath Yatra has been recent but significant. Until 2015, Baltal was the primary helipad. However, a joint decision by the J & K Government and Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) transitioned the helicopter services from Baltal to the more feasible Neelgrath. Now, while Baltal remains open, it is exclusively for the foot-trekking pilgrims.

Geographical Insight:

  • Altitude: Neelgrath stands majestically at an altitude of 8,935 feet above sea level, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountainous terrain.

  • Location: Conveniently positioned, Neelgrath is merely 4 km from the picturesque valley of Sonmarg and 12 km from the previously used Baltal. Pilgrims arriving from Srinagar will find Neelgrath around 84 km away, a drive that generally spans 2-3 hours. For those journeying from Jammu, the distance stretches to approximately 384 km.

Accommodation & Amenities: Given its proximity to Sonmarg, a renowned tourist destination itself, Neelgrath benefits from the well-established infrastructure of its neighboring town. Pilgrims can find a plethora of hotels in Sonmarg, catering to various budget categories. These accommodations ensure that devotees have a comfortable stay before or after their divine journey to the Amarnath Ji cave by helicopter.

With its efficient services and strategic location, Neelgrath has undoubtedly cemented its place as a pivotal point in the sacred Amarnath Ji Yatra.

ABOUT LOWER-CAVE HELIPAD

Perched amidst the divine serenity of the Himalayas, the Lower-cave helipad serves as a crucial stopover for pilgrims en route to the sacred Amarnath Ji cave.

Strategic Location & Facilities: Upon landing at the Lower-cave helipad, the ethereal Amarnath Ji cave is a mere 500 meters away. However, the trek, albeit short, can be challenging due to the rugged terrain and thin air. Typically, devotees allocate around 2 hours to make the journey to the cave, receive the darshan (divine sight) of the ice Shiva Linga, and return to the helipad.

Altitude & Environment: The Lower-cave helipad stands towering at an impressive altitude of 12,500 feet. Due to its high elevation, oxygen levels are lower, and many pilgrims may experience symptoms of altitude sickness. To combat this, it’s recommended to acclimate gradually, and if you feel any discomfort, it’s crucial to acknowledge it.

Recommendations & Services: Given the helipad’s high-altitude location, pilgrims are strongly advised against undertaking the trek on foot. The path can be strenuous, and even those in good health might find it challenging. Instead, utilize the Horses and Palki (palanquin) services that are readily available at the helipad. They offer a safer and more comfortable means to approach the holy cave.

For those eager to return, the boarding for the flight back to Neelgrath from the Lower-cave helipad operates on a First-Come-First-Serve basis, ensuring pilgrims can continue their journey efficiently.

Accommodation & Amenities: A significant aspect to note for pilgrims is the absence of accommodation facilities at the Lower-cave helipad. As such, devotees should plan their stay and essential amenities beforehand.

The Lower-cave helipad, with its proximity to the holy cave and the services it offers, is undeniably an integral part of the Amarnath Ji Yatra, providing devotees with a smoother, more manageable pilgrimage.

SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR HELICOPTER JOURNEY

Your safety is of paramount importance to us. When traveling by helicopter, it’s crucial to follow certain guidelines to ensure a smooth and secure journey. Here are the key safety measures to be observed during your helicopter ride:

  1. Guidance by Ground Staff: Always be attentive to the ground staff and adhere to their instructions. They will escort you to the helicopter and provide guidance throughout.

  2. Securing Loose Items: Ensure items like scarves, caps, dupattas, etc., are tightly secured to prevent them from being blown away by the rotor wash.

  3. Avoid the Tail Rotor: The tail rotor is a crucial part of the helicopter but is also perilous. Never approach or walk towards the rear of the aircraft.

  4. Seat Belt Etiquette: Your seat belt should remain fastened at all times when seated. It’s a primary safety measure.

  5. Helicopter Doors: Our trained staff will handle the opening and closing of the aircraft doors. Please refrain from doing it on your own.

  6. Emergency Handles: Red handles inside the helicopter are emergency apparatus. Avoid touching them unless it’s an emergency.

  7. Cell Phones: It’s essential to keep your mobile phone switched off during the entire duration of the flight for safety and communication interference concerns.

  8. No Photography: Aerial photography, as well as capturing moments at the helipad, is strictly off-limits.

  9. Restricted Items: Carrying fire arms, sharp objects, matches, lighters, and certain food items, including fruits, are prohibited.

  10. Ear Discomfort: Change in altitude can sometimes lead to ear discomfort. If you experience this, please notify the ground staff immediately upon landing.

  11. Prohibited Actions: Smoking and alcohol consumption are strictly forbidden inside the aircraft. Moreover, individuals under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be denied boarding.

For a pleasant and safe journey, it’s imperative to follow these guidelines diligently. We wish you a smooth and serene flight. Safe travels!

HEALTH ADVISORY: Navigating High Altitudes of Shri Amarnathji Cave

Location and Altitude Concerns: The revered Shri Amarnathji Cave, nestled atop the South Kashmir Himalayas, stands majestically at a height of 13,500 feet. Trekking at such soaring altitudes presents the body with unique challenges such as extreme cold, low humidity levels, augmented ultra-violet radiation exposure, and notably, diminished air pressure and oxygen availability.

Brief Stays and Acclimatization: Given the short duration of your stay, the body may struggle to adapt to the scarce oxygen levels. It is imperative not to rush and exert oneself. A steady pace and frequent pauses to catch your breath can make a significant difference. To ensure safety and reduced physical strain, it is highly recommended that pilgrims opt for Horse or Palki services rather than trekking.

Potential Health Concerns at High Altitude: At elevated terrains, the risk of altitude sickness looms large. Depending on individual health and fitness, pilgrims may experience:

  1. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS):

    • At Risk Altitude: Above 2,500 meters.
    • Symptoms: Challenges in breathing, persistent headaches, reduced appetite, nausea, bouts of vomiting, extreme fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and disturbed sleep.
  2. High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE):

    • Concern: Swelling of brain tissues leading to potential impairment.
    • Manifestation: Typically at night, rapidly progressing to coma or death within hours.
    • Symptoms: Breathing irregularities, severe headache, fatigue, blurred vision, bladder and bowel dysfunctions, confusion, and partial paralysis.
  3. High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE):

    • Concern: Fluid accumulation in the lungs leading to respiratory failure.
    • Manifestation: Usually on the second night in high altitudes, rapidly progressing to life-threatening conditions.
    • Symptoms: Shortness of breath, persistent dry cough, sputum with bright red spots, extreme weakness, fatigue, drowsiness, chest congestion, rapid heart rate. It is noted that younger individuals are more prone to HAPE due to potential over-exertion.

Final Note: Health and safety are paramount. It is vital to be aware of your body’s responses and promptly seek medical attention if any of the mentioned symptoms appear. Your pilgrimage is a journey of faith, and taking precautions will ensure it remains a spiritually fulfilling experience. Safe travels!

HIGH ALTITUDE DO’S & DON’TS for a Safe and Fulfilling Yatra

Do’s:

  1. Enhance Physical Fitness: Embark on a 4-5 km morning/evening walk a month before the Yatra to enhance oxygen efficiency.

  2. Opt for Palkis/Horses: This alternative to trekking significantly reduces the risk of altitude sickness.

  3. Take Regular Breaks: Whenever fatigued, pause to rejuvenate and catch your breath.

  4. Stay Alert to Symptoms: Be observant of symptoms like excessive fatigue, headaches, nausea, loss of appetite, or vomiting.

  5. Dress Aptly: Refrain from wearing sarees. Opt for Salwar Kameez, pant-shirt, or tracksuits. Pregnant women beyond six weeks should abstain from the Yatra.

  6. Waterproof Your Belongings: Store spare clothes and snacks in a waterproof bag to protect against unexpected rains.

  7. Skin Protection: Arm yourself with cold creams, Vaseline, or sunscreen to shield against sunburn and harsh weather.

  8. Keep Identification Handy: Always carry your Yatra permit or any identity card for unforeseen emergencies.

Don’ts:

  1. Avoid Warning Zones: Bypass areas with warning signs for your safety.

  2. Refrain from Over-Exertion: Maintain a steady pace; avoid rushing which can lead to breathlessness.

  3. Act on Symptoms: Should you experience symptoms like fatigue, headaches, nausea, loss of appetite, or vomiting, seek immediate medical attention.

  4. Shoe Choice Matters: Ditch slippers. The terrain demands trekking shoes with laces due to its steep and uneven paths.

  5. Beware of Shortcuts: They might seem tempting but can be perilous. Stick to the designated path.

  6. Trek in Groups: The strength lies in numbers. Due to inconsistent mobile network coverage, especially at Panjtarni, it’s safer to stay with your group. If someone is lost, utilize the Public Announcement (PA) system available at Panjtarni.

Embarking on such a revered journey requires both mental and physical preparation. Adhering to these guidelines ensures a smoother and spiritually rewarding experience. Safe travels!
